1970-71 Quick Facts

  • DeSales became the first Central Ohio wrestling program to capture a State Championship

  • The Stallions' 1970-71 wrestling team won the school's first state championship

  • DeSales qualified the most wrestlers for the State Tournament, in either division, with eight

  • Going into the state tournament, seven matmen had recorded at least 22 wins (Jack Metzger and Tim Wilson - 29, Tom Bauer - 27, Joe Gordon and Tom Lentz - 25, Jim Mussio - 24, Jon Greene - 22)

  • The Stallions won their 8th straight CCL Championship and won nine individual titles at the CCL Meet

  • Tim Wilson was recognized as the most outstanding wrestler at the CCL Tournament and was awarded the Casey Fredericks Trophy

  • DeSales won the 1971 Top 8 Mat Meet, finishing ahead of Upper Arlington 118-84

  • The Stallions finished as runner-up in the Catholic Invitational

  • The 1970-71 team competed in eight tournaments and averaged 108 points

  • DeSales set a school record for most individual match wins in a single season with 300 (previous record:  194)

  • The Stallions also set a single season record with 90 total pins

  • DeSales returned 8 lettermen from the 1969-1970 team, which finished 10th in the state (there were no divisions in 1970)

  • Tim Wilson and Joe Gordon served as the team captains
